BJJ cardio on a treadmill
FightZone Running is an iOS treadmill training app for combat-sport athletes. It turns any treadmill into fight-camp conditioning, with coach-voiced workouts built on real round lengths for MMA, boxing, BJJ and kickboxing, speed and incline set from your own base pace, and four levels from Novice to Championship Fighter. Coming soon to the App Store for iPhone. Pricing to be confirmed.
Short answer
BJJ is a long, grinding, grip-dominant effort, closer to 1:1 work-to-rest than striking. The best treadmill cardio for BJJ is 5–6 minute rounds on an incline plus easy aerobic running, rather than lots of flat sprints. FightZone Running's BJJ track uses 5–6 minute grinding rounds on the incline.
Why incline suits grapplers
A steeper grade raises heart rate at a lower speed, which means less impact on legs that already take a beating on the mats. Brisk incline walking gets close to the energy cost of easy running. Steep power walking (like the 12-3-30 workout) is moderate intensity and very low impact, ideal for easy days.
Sessions for BJJ
- BJJ fight track: 5–6 minute incline rounds inside 8-week Coach Plans.
- The Mat Grinder: incline steps inside each round, with speed reduced as grade rises so effort stays right.
- Weight Cut Walk: a steep power walk for easy days, up to 15% for Amateur and Championship levels where the treadmill allows.
The app currently caps incline at 8% until the in-app health check is complete, asks how steep your treadmill goes, and caps anyone reporting Achilles or calf problems at 5%.
Questions
What cardio is best for BJJ?
Long moderate-to-hard efforts that match rolling, plus an easy aerobic base. On a treadmill that means 5–6 minute incline rounds and easy runs or power walks.
Does running help jiu-jitsu?
It can't train grip or upper body, but a bigger aerobic engine helps you recover between scrambles and between rolls.
